What is respite care?

Respite care (also called ‘temporary respite care’) provides your usual care giver with some time away from their role.

In some cases, they may also be family members or loved ones – this gives them the chance to get back to spending time with you, in a non-professional capacity. Temporary respite care ensures you are receiving high-quality care, whilst also taking the pressure off the ones you love most. This puts your care and your health back into your own hands.

Temporary respite care can last a few hours, a few days, or even a few weeks – depending on what you want! It’s care on your schedule – flexible and non-intrusive. However much (or however little!) contact with our carers you require, we can make it work. Even in just one hour of care, Walfinch are proud to promote 10 minutes of physical activity.

Absolutely! We understand the emotional distress changes can make. We match you with a carer that suits your needs and personality – making our respite care services as un-intrusive as possible. Temporary respite care benefits both you and your usual care giver. By arranging respite care, you can maintain your routines – whilst your usual care giver has a well-deserved break. This may be so they can go on holiday, spend more time with their own family, or spend more time with you as family. You should always speak closely with your usual care giver to come to a decision on your respite care together.

If you’re pleased with your respite care, you can absolutely alter your care package to become long-term – but make sure you discuss this with your usual care giver beforehand, and that you’re both on the same page. You may want to extend your care visits or add in overnight care. It’s up to you how Walfinch best fits into your life.

That depends entirely on your situation. The purpose of temporary respite care is to give your usual care give a break. In some cases, they may be going away for a few days. In others, they may continue living with you during this period – but spend time with you in a non-professional capacity. This is something we can work out together.

You have the freedom to be picky! Before we launch any care, we produce thorough and personalised care plans. This includes all those little details that make the world of difference – how you like your eggs, which day the bins go out, whether your cat likes wet or dry food. Whatever it is, however you like it, it’s our job to ensure our care includes this.
