Stoma Management

What is a stoma?

If you’re new to having a stoma, it may take a little while to adjust – which our Walfinch carers are able to help you with.

A stoma is an opening on the abdomen that can be connected either to the digestive system or urinary system. This allows bodily waste to leave the body. Some people have used a stoma for most of their lives, others start using a stoma due to changes in their health.

The three types of stoma

In the past, we have supported people with:

  • Colostomy: an opening in the large bowel (colon) through the surface of the abdomen.
  • Ileostomy: an opening in the small bowel (ileum) through the surface of the abdomen.
  • Urostomy: an opening in the urinary tract through the surface of the abdomen.

These can sound a bit daunting to some people, especially if you’re relatively new to using a stoma. But with our stoma expertise and empathetic support, we can help adjust your lifestyle – putting you back in control of your health management.

You can still lead a full and active life with a stoma – the biggest impact, people find, is emotional. That’s why our care and support goes beyond a tick list. It’s about personalising your care to best help you, as an individual, to thrive.

By having help with stoma management, you can focus on getting the most out of life – without embarrassment or anxiety. Many of our clients who use stomas, once they adjusted to the change, felt it positively impacted their lives – and it was totally necessary for them to thrive. We encourage you to contact your local Walfinch branch to check what they can do for you.

Your care, designed around you

In order to provide care that works for you, we will first carry out a friendly care assessment at your house. This is so we can meet you in-person and gain an understanding of your needs and personal goals. You may want your family to attend too, so we can meet them – because finding the care provider that’s right for you, is a decision best done together.

Another way in which we help our clients to thrive is promoting at least 10 minutes of activity per one hour visit. For someone living with a stoma, keeping active and maintaining mobility helps maintain independence.

We can work with you to understand your preferred activity and movement, to help you take control of your health.

Start thriving today through quality care

It’s never too early to kickstart your thriving journey. Use your care to take control back over your life and your health – and we can navigate these uncertain times together.

We don’t see care as the end – it’s just the next chapter. Many clients find that just four just 4 hours of care a week have provided transformative results.

It’s never been easier to live better for longer. Through various techniques and approaches to care, tailored around your lifestyle and goals, you can make now your time to thrive.

Expert answers to your frequently asked questions about stoma management.

You can still pursue an active lifestyle after getting a stoma fitted. Once you’ve recovered from your operation, our Walfinch carers can work with you to help you stay on top of your physical health. We can also liaise with your doctor to determine which activities are best for you.

We recommend you begin by contacting your Walfinch branch. We will then arrange a friendly care assessment, where we meet you and your family in person, at your home. Going forwards, we can then create a care plan that best reflects your individual needs – including your personal health goals, which we can support you to pursue.

We train our carers in-house, the Walfinch way. They undergo comprehensive training so that they can care for people with a wide range of needs. We have very high standards regarding training – meaning our carers must pass a series of in-person examinations, training sessions and online learning before helping people in their own homes.

A care plan contains all the relevant information our carers need to understand and cater to your individual needs. It is created off the back of care assessments, which may be carried out on an ongoing basis, to ensure all your information and requirements are up to date. We view your care plan as your roadmap to thrive.
